THE MONTEBELLO

A new architectural landmark for the oldest street in Ilfracombe

A new architectural landmark for the oldest street in Ilfracombe, which combines community, residential, and living space, and revitalises the site of the historic Montebello Hotel which was destroyed by fire in 2006. Our design breathes life back into this derelict space, to create a socially and environmentally sustainable vibrant mix of shops, apartments, and public space.  The site is within a stylistically varied conservation area, a mix of listed buildings and intricate detailing creating a diverse streetscape which leads dramatically down to the harbour, revealing fantastic views. Our design responds to this complex topography, changing in level to create an interesting roofscape and to open up and frame the harbour and beach views. We propose to use Passive House principles to create a super low energy, low environmental impact architectural statement, that will provide new living space and affordable apartments for local people, live/work and studio spaces, and a vibrant street presence for shopping, evening strolling and café life.
